The magnitude 8.8 Chilean earthquake of February 27, 2010 is one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. This earthquake occurred in a very seismically active region off the coast of central Chile. Hundreds of thousands of lives were impacted by the event and the accompanying tsunami caused more widespread damage than the earthquake. Although many cities in Chile suffered severe damage, the existence of modern building codes resulted in the limited loss of life and property. Many lessons can be learned from the recent events in Chile.
