Probably one of the biggest things that prevents players from beating a defender in soccer 1v1 is doubting themselves when taking the player on!
If you don't think you'll be able to beat the player, then of course you're more likely to make a mistake! Go in with confidence!
Soccer Mistakes To Avoid When 1v1 #2
Next is not taking control of the situation. Don't let the defender dictate what happens. If you see that he is trying to contain you and wait for help, run directly at him. If you see that he is trying to back you into a corner, cut inside.
You want the defender to feel nervous and unsure. If he feels in control, he'll try and make you do what he wants which will most likely be turn the ball over or turn around.

One of the biggest things that frustrates me when I watch matches is when a player has an opportunity to take a player on, but decides to just turn back around.
Essentially, I hate it when a player won't be direct at all! If you have a 1v1 situation with plenty of space behind the defender, it is usually worth the risk. Run at them! Make them nervous. Cause them to sweat.

This is another big one that I see far too often. Letting the defender recover is a rookie mistake that you should never allow to happen.
Sure, sometimes the defender will just do well and recover, but you want to do everything in your power to make sure he doesn't. You do this by playing quickly, cutting across his path, or bursting into the space you just created.

Finally, if you don't practice 1v1 situations, you can't hope to beat players in matches.
When it comes down to it, practice will always be the answer. You can't expect to go into a match without experience and be able to somehow magically beat a player one v one. Even if you have all these ideas!
Practice, practice, practice! That is what is going to allow you to do these things in matches more consistently.
