[dt.] Borobudur, ca. 40 km nordwestlich von Yogyakarta im Kedu Tal im Zentrum von Java, ist eine der größten buddhistischen Tempelanlagen Südostasiens. Das ca. 1200 Jahre alte Bauwerk war lange Zeit in Dschungel versunken, wurde 1814 wieder entdeckt und in 10-jähriger Bauzeit von 1973 bis 1983 restauriert. 72 Stupas und 504 Buddhastatuen schmücken das kolossale Bauwerk, das 1991 zum Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO erklärt wurde.
[en.] Borobudur, approx. 25 mi northwest of Yogykarta in the Kedu valley in central Java, is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia. The 1,200-year-old building was hidden in the jungle for a long time. It was discovered in 1814 and restored in a 10-year construction period 1973 to 1983. 72 stupas and 504 Buddha statues adorn the gigantic building which has been declared by a World Heritage Site in 1991.
